A scientific revolution does not happen when a solitary mind announces a new universe. It happens when reality acquires new witnesses: instruments, particles, signals and procedures that can disagree and still be brought into a common account.

The book therefore begins with messengers rather than doctrines. Photons are joined by meteorites, cosmic rays, neutrinos and gravitational waves. Each carries different testimony; each is damaged by distance, noise, matter or the detector’s limits. Knowledge grows not by removing mediation but by multiplying forms of mediation whose failures differ. Bignami is at his best when he keeps bolts, delays, rivalries and lucky accidents attached to the result.
