, describes a public intellectual space that opened during reform and opening and is now disappearing; the interview itself was taken down shortly after publication. Xu is not presented as a dissident hero striking a pose. The mood is sadder and more precise: a type of public intellectual work has lost its room. Influencer formats, short videos, media cocoons, and ideological discipline do not simply censor an old class of speakers.
